Pirate just phone from the office. He never phones from the office. This was the first time ever.
He wanted to tell me he'd just received the paperwork and we've been allocated a house. He couldn't wait until he got home to tell me. (All together now: "Awwww!")
We'll be living in Torpoint, just on the west side of the river from Plymouth.

It's close to Pirate's work, a short walk to the ferry, and (and this is the really nice bit) it will be ...
...quiet.
No ambulances every 15 seconds, no screaming drunk people, no stepping over pools of vomit on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday mornings. Few cars, more birds. Lovely.
A house. A home. Our home. My first home with another person. My first home with my Pirate. Yarr. I can't wait.

You will have to call it Stevedore Road instead!
How fab, congrats xx
Awww. Congratulations! Happy new house!
That is awesome news...very exciting...
especially the abscence of vomit part..bleccch!
Go YOU!
Congrats. That is what I need to work on now too, a house. Not that I have to deal with vommit but my place is less than 100 yards off of a major freeway and the traffic noise is horrible.
Congratulations! It will be gorgeous.
Wow...that is fantastic :)
You will of course have a Jolly Roger on a flagpole in the yard I assume? :P
zig: why stevedor road? (and i suppose i should confess that the house isn't on the road i've pinpointed, but it is in that area. I didn't want to give away too much info.)
annie/donn/nerd/homer: thank you!
geo: there'll be something on the flag pole all right!
I think ziggi might not have grasped the distinction between a Doctor and a docker.
Congratulations to the both of you.
wuh? doctor? now i'm even more confused!
Geosomin - I suspect they'll have a jolly roger in every room in the house.
(Soz, couldn't help it.)
Docker = stevedore, Doctor = PhD. You are going to get those letters after your name, aren't you?
If you're going to live in South Devon, I may have to invite you to a cricket match.
It's slowly starting to come together, but you're still speaking Greek. I get the Doctor/PhD connection, but I have no idea who/what Stevedor is. Presumably docker refers to someone who works on the docks, but I don't see what that has to do with anything either. I'm afraid your clarification needs more clarification.
(I suspect this is going to turn out to be one of those cultural references I've never come across.)
OK I've just gone and done a bit of googling to help me decipher all your guys' goofy-ass confusing humor. 3 years I've been here and people are still able to lob words at me that i've never heard before. It's so frustrating when that happens. I feel like i'm missing some deliberately inside joke, and while everyone else is laughing I'm standing there looking stupid and drooling. Well, maybe not drooling.
But we never learn new words unless people use them around us, so it's not a bad thing. Just a reminder that I'm an alien here.
So, my attempt at a witty play on words caught a crab. No matter. I'd be much happier if you were standing there looking incredibly intelligent. (And drooling.)
Congrats! That's so wonderful. I know you must be over the moon right now :) I must also cast my vote for flying the jolly roger in the front yard. I think you should also, in grand Bermy tradition, name your house -of course our inherited house name implies strongly that we are homeless and live amongst the greenery, but if you're the first to name yours you get to start off right :)
Are you nearly Dr Itch, then? And I thought love had come between you and Doctorsville for the time being. Well, congrats.
Excellent News.
AND a worktime phone call.
I bet your soooooooooooo excited
When I lived by the sea, the stevedores (longshoremen) working on the ships unloading them and suchlike, had a (obviously erroneous)reputation (in urban history)of making off with much of the boat's contents, much like pirates, which is why they were/are known as pirates
taa daa!
although it's not easy to tell a pirate from a phd or a docker from a doctor, it's true, and I am easily confused.
congrats and all that yes yes yes..
PIX!PIX!PIX!PIX!PIX!PIX!PIX!PIX!
your first place is going to be SO MUCH FUN! I envy you that, making a new home and doing all that nesting stuff! Excellent!
Gordie: you've got the lingo down now, though!
Ez: I don't think we get to name this one, as it's MOD property, but someday maybe we will get to name a house, and if we do i've got one all picked out already! *rubs palms together and cackles maniacly*
TB: won't be Dr. Bitch for a little while yet.
Beast: does it show?
Zig-a-zigh-ah: it's all becoming clear to me now.
FN: I haven't even seen it yet, except on Google satelite there. There's a very good chance I won't see it at all until I move in, which will be the day after the wedding. I'll be sure to put up photos in due course, of course.
I'm not familiar with the concept of being allocated a house. Will you please explain.
Pirate works for a company that provides some of it's employees with subsidized housing. We don't get to choose the house, the location, any of the features, the furniture, and we're not allowed to redecorate, but we can do what we like with the garden provided it is "nicely kept."
We still pay rent, but it's well below market value, hence enduring all the above-listed inconvenience. For the house we've been allocated we'll be paying about in rent what you'd pay for a small one-bedroom flat or a decent-sized bedsit (studio). It's got 3 bedrooms, a garage, a decent-sized garden, and views over the sea. w00t.
