Sleeping the Plank

The plywood did the trick.

I went down to the lumber yard (1/2 mile walk), picked out a sheet of plywood, got them to trim it to the right dimensions for me and deliver it that afternoon. Whacked it on the bed with the help of the Pirate when he got home from swashbuckling, and lo! A (mostly) firm bed!

It's still a bit spongy, but eliminating the give from the box spring has done a lot to firm it up. The big change is that now I can turn over at night, which I couldn't before. That helps a LOT.

So this will get us through at least until the New Year. Pirate has finally been persuaded that we need a new bed anyway, if only to upgrade in size. After I spent three nights on the floor* and he had room to stretch out, I climbed back in and he declared the bed too small.**

*In my nest. I slept on my camping bedroll between the bed and the wall, a space about 2 feet wide and 8 feet long. I had 3 pillows (two for under my head and one for hugging***) and burried myself under 2 down duvets (one of which was king size and folded in half). It was a proper little nest. I quite enjoyed it.

** Which I told him when we registered for the duvet on the wedding list. I insisted on getting a king size because I knew we'd need a king-sized**** bed as soon as we could afford it. He scoffed. Ha!

*** this is critical

**** A king size bed in the UK is equivalent to a queen size in the USA*****

Glad to know you're feeling better. I just spent 3 nights on a hospital floor and I can empathize re non goodness of sleep!

Oh, hurrah!

PS. You're going to have your work cut out beating Jenny the Bloggess for most footnotes in the footnotes.

Why not get rid of the bed completely, and both of you sleep on the floor?

I thought a queen was a double? What's a US king then? A superking? I'm buying completely the wrong bedding obviously.

pp: the hospital floor??? Fuck me that sounds uncomfortable. And loud. And cold. Don't they have plywood in hospitals?

Farty: those were ps's, not footnotes. Is different. But thanks for the link; she's hilarious.

Dave: It's not the worst idea in the world, except we did that for 6 months whenever Pirate came to visit me in Bristol, and I think we're both enjoying the concept of the bed. Also he loves the squishness. (of the bed, not my anatomy.)

GSE: in the USA the sizes are:
Twin
Double
Queen
King
In the UK the equivalent sizes are
Twin/Single
Double
King
Superking
Same sizes, just slightly different naming system.

What do they have against Queens in the UK? I mean, they've had one forever now........

ohhhh yeah. uk beds. awful.

the trick is to find a Sealey warehouse and buy their top-of-the-line Sealey Posturepedic. an order of magnitude better than the 3rd class stuff which they sell via the chains rebadged. get the soft or medium -- your concerns re Firm are due to poor-quality beds. these ones have progressive resistance, so the top is soft-as, but the overall effect is firm. means you sink into its top sufficiently not to be annoyed by your body re-shaping to the bed's shape, but supported sufficiently to actually be lying flat.

expensive. but they last for at least a decade (so far) without changing in quality or comfort. on an annual basis, they're not just excruciatingly better than anything else on the market, they're less than half-price.

also, they completely isolate each side of the bed. you can lie on one side, and pirate can JUMP HIGH onto the other half, and you won't move.

also also?
best. sex. beds. ever.
